It is no secret that cocktail bars are back with a vengeance. Slowly but surely, these cocktail centered establishments are popping up just about everywhere. One of my favorites, La Factoria, is located right in the heart of the famous San Sebastian Street in Old San Juan.
La Factoria opened its doors in April 2013 and is located in the building which previously housed one of Puerto Rico’s most beloved bars: Hijos de Borinquen. There is no sign on the door so just look for the terracota building right in the corner of where San Jose St. meets San Sebastian St. and you can’t miss it.
With mixologists Roberto Berdecia, winner of Puerto Rico’s World Class Bartender 2011 and Leslie Cofresí, winner of Puerto Rico’s World Class Bartender World Class Bartender 2012 on staff, be prepared to have a very well made tasty drink.
The ambiance at La Factoria is laid back and intimate. The menu of the house specialty drinks is not extensive, however, you are sure to find something that will tickle your taste buds. They also have tapas available, which I did not try during my recent visit.
I decided to order the Spiced Old Fashioned. The drink was executed perfectly and well garnished. It was so good that I just kept ordering the same drink all night long.
Throughout the night, I watched the mixologists assemble a variety of drinks; the amount of time and care that goes into each glass is truly admirable. At La Factoria they understand that a cocktail can and should be as finely crafted as a good meal.
So if you are in Old San Juan and in the mood for a drink, make sure to give some love to this amazing establishment. I promise you won’t regret it.
