Located in Hato Rey, you will find El Gaucho Real. It opened on January 2012 and is owned by José Somma, an Argentinian lovingly known as El Gaucho to many of his customers. At el Gaucho Real, you will find a variety of handmade Argentinian empanadas stuffed with ingredients ranging from flavorful meats to creamy cheeses. Worried about the calories? Don’t be! These delicious stuffed pastries are baked!
As soon as you walk in, you will be greeted with a big smile from El Gaucho, dressed in his trademark hat, neckerchief, wool and leather sash belt, and boots. I cannot describe what it is about him, but he just emits good vibes.
On this visit, I decided to order one of my personal favorites, the Lujanera Empanada. It is stuffed with ham, bacon, and cheese. The flaky and crispy crust paired with saltiness of the ham and bacon were a delight!
I wanted to bring some sweet goodies for the girls at the office, so I decided to order the Guava and Cheese Empanada. It was a hit! The sweet guava flavor was balanced by the delicious melted cheese.
Insiders tip: You can order a dozen of your favorite empanadas to bake at home. Having a party? No problem. El Gaucho Real offers “gauchitas” or bite size empanadas ideal for party appetizers.
