If you were to ask me what are my top five bars in Old San Juan, I would say without hesitation that one of them is La Taberna Lúpulo. I have been loyal customer of La Taberna Lúpulo since its beginnings at their original location on the corner Cruz Street and Sol Street (across from St. Germain). When I used to work in Old San Juan, on Thursday nights there was no question as to where I was headed for happy hour, it was there. As their popularity soared, so did their need for a bigger space. So in 2012 they made the move to their current location in San Sebastian Street.
A casual bar with a lively atmosphere, La Taberna Lúpulo is an ideal place for beer connoisseurs and beginners alike. I know some people who had their first beer here. They might have even used a scannable fake id to get into the bar in the first place but I couldn’t possibly comment. La Taberna Lúpulo feature an impressive beer selection with over thirty rotating beers on tap and a constantly updated extensive bottled beer menu.
If you are unsure as to what to order, don’t worry, the friendly and knowledgeable bartenders are ready to answer your questions and/or give you recommendations on what to order. The best part, some will even let you try a small sample of your beer of choice prior to ordering it.
On this visit, for my first beer I ordered the Samuel Smith Nut Brown Ale. It has a beautiful auburn color and smooth caramel and nutty taste. I have yet to try a Samuel Smith beer that I have not enjoyed. Highly recommended!
For my second beer, I ordered the Goose Island Nut Brown Ale. It has a dark brown color with a hearty toast and malty flavor. A delicious beer indeed.
Getting hungry after all that drinking? No problem. La Taberna Lupulo’s menu also includes a varied selection of bar bites. Insiders tip: A few months back they began serving a nice boozy brunch on Sundays. Can’t wait to check it out.
