On February 22-23, 2014, the Convention Center will be transformed into a gigantic convention of barbecues, grills, and “parrilladas” thanks to the celebration of the 7th Annual Cattlemen’s Caribbean BBQ Competition & Outdoor Festival. Recognized as the largest event of this culinary discipline in the Caribbean, the Cattlemen’s Caribbean BBQ Competition will feature over fifty (50) culinary teams, more than thirty five (35) sponsors, and ten (10) culinary categories, among them: Authentic BBQ and Grilling Techniques.
“The Cattlemen’s Caribbean BBQ Competition is the first competition in Puerto Rico focused on outdoor gastronomic activities, interactive entertainment, and fun for the whole family. In turn, the event is geared towards developing Puerto Rican gastronomy, provide due recognition to our most distinguished chefs, as well as facilitate first class events for culinary arts fans,” stated Alexis García, producer of the event. “One of the biggest attractions of the Cattlemen’s Caribbean BBQ Competition is that it is the only competition where BBQ experts and amateurs enter into a heated competition with a wide variety of categories which allows the competitors to stand out in their preferred techniques.”
According to García, the Cattlemen’s Caribbean BBQ Competition is the first competition in the island with over $6,000 in prizes and first class sponsors which provide all the meats and many of the complements the competitors will use when preparing their dishes. The winners will have the opportunity to represent Puerto Rico and the Caribbean in one of the most prestigious BBQ competitions in the United States. This year, the event will feature some of the most recognized chefs in the island, some participating in one of the most acclaimed events in the competition like the “BBQ Chef Challenge” and the “Culinary University Challenge.”
This year, the 7th Annual Cattlemen’s Caribbean BBQ Competition & Outdoor Festival, will be held for the first time in the month of February and will commence on Saturday at 12:00 p.m. with the “Grilling Competition”, a culinary style better known for using high temperatures and cooking over direct heat. That day, the “Culinary Universities Challenge” will be held, as well as, contests in the following categories: hamburgers, beef/steak, roasted pig, wings, and desserts, all made on the charcoal grill.
On Sunday, the activities will commence at 11:00 a.m. with the “Chef’s Challenge,” where recognized culinary experts from the island will compete to measure their talents. Also, the “Slow Smoking BBQ Competition” will take place, using a culinary style consisting in the preparation of meats at low temperatures using indirect heat for its confection. The “Slow Smoking BBQ Competition” categories include: briskets, ribs, pork shoulder, and chicken. Also, the best BBQ Sauce will be selected.
As it does every year, the Cattlemen’s Caribbean BBQ Competition will feature a wide variety of activities such as music, exhibitions, musical performances, and cooking demonstrations, as well as magic shows, games and inflatables for the kids”, García assured.
