When we meet a person like Franck Evers, who works to ensure that each Heineken client drinks their beer exactly the way it should be enjoyed, it is difficult to decide whether to idolize him or envy him. Evers, considered today as the ‘Wanderer’ of beers used to work as a psychiatric nurse, a tennis coach, and a bar manager. However, in present day, he has the legendary work of traveling the world and offering workshops on how to serve the perfect Heineken.
Evans began his path to the beer world many years ago when he owned a bar in Holland. There, he noticed his interest in how the beer was served and the effect it had on the experience of drinking it. Evers joined a bar employee trainer who worked for Heineiken creating a training guide for serving beer. This way, Heineken saw the benefits of the trainings and were convinced that their customers wanted to have the same experience when drinking their beer, so they created the “Well Poured Progam” which has been running for over 10 years.
Is there an exact science on how to properly serve a beer? Maybe not, but although beer recipes come and go, the great taste and consistency of the Heineken brand has remained among the favorites in its category for over 100 years. For the expert, a “good beer” can be an unforgettable experience, if the art of the pour and correct presentation is learned.
According to Evers, in order for Heineken to have a genuine flavor, you must pay full attention to its foam. Developing the skills to serve the beer with the right amount of foam allows the beverage to have a protective coating that prevents oxygenation, prolongs its fizz, and contributes to its appearance.
Evers’s visit to Puerto Rico is due to the launch of Heineken Draught on the Island. “Heineken is known for its constant innovation in the beer market. We are extremely proud that Puerto Rico already has about 70 businesses offering consumers the unique experience of serving Heineken Draught. We understand that by the end of the year, more than 130 establishments will offer the product,” said Chris Lakens, Brand Manager for Heineken Puerto Rico. He added that later in the year the complete product platform along with all of its components will be launched.
For his part, Jolliam Berrios, Senior Brand Manager of the Liquor Division at Méndez & Co., said that it is a great privilege to receive Evers to assist in Heineken Puerto Rico’s training program. “Heineken already has a complete training program led by our local employees, but having Franck definitely enhances our effort,” said Berrios. “He is very charismatic and loves what he does,” he added.
This is the first time that the beer expert will be visiting the Island to ensure that all employees, customers, and bartenders are trained to serve the perfect Heineken. Evers has trained over 30,000 people in more than 45 countries on the art of serving the perfect Heineken. His work has taken him to the Winter Olympics, beer commercials, and even Hollywood. All to ensure that the beer is served with the correct technique in order for it to be perfect in every city of the world.
The following are the five steps to serving a perfect beer:
Step 1: Rinse
The glass should be rinsed with cold water. The glass should never be dried with a towel, since its fibers destroy the beer foam.
Step 2: Pour
To serve the freshest beer, you should allow some beer out of the barrel before serving in the glass. Movement must be controlled while pouring so that the liquid enters in a spiral and at the end, overflows a bit.
Step 3: Stir
Remove the excess foam with a wet skimmer so that a fine coating of water on top of the foam remains protecting the beer from oxygenation.
Step 4: Check
The continental Heineken’s foam should have the thickness of two fingers, since this prevents oxygenation, keeps it cool and fresh for a longer time, and of course, improves its appearance.
Step 5: Serve
The glass should always be presented with the Heineken logo facing the consumer.
