As I have explained in previous posts, when it comes to Indian or Thai cuisine, in Puerto Rico we do not have much to choose from. I can easily count the amount of Indian or Thai restaurants with just one hand (TEAR!).
A few years ago, while out for drinks in the Condado area with my hubby, we discovered Bangkok & Bombay, a Thai and Indian restaurant. We loved the food so much that we became regulars at the place. Then one day, unexpectedly, the restaurant closed. We found it again by pure chance while on a road trip through Coamo. However, this location was a bit far from our home (one hour away from the metropolitan area). Last year, we were pleasantly surprised to find out that the restaurant had moved to Santurce.
Let me start of by saying that I am not a fan of the new location. Don’t get me wrong, I love Santurce, but they chose a very rundown area where parking is a problem. The décor and interiors of the restaurant leave a lot to be desired. The place feels a bit worn down.
Last Sunday, Fernando and I had a craving for Bangkok & Bombay so we decided to pay them a visit. After arriving at the restaurant, we were quickly seated by our server and given the menu. It is divided in the following manner: the first half of the menu is Thai and the second half is Indian. In order to get our meal started off right, we ordered two ice-cold Singha’s (Thai Beer). Delicious and refreshing!
For our appetizers, we decided to go with the Duck Roll (Duck, Hoisin Sauce, Cream Cheese, Carrots, Zucchini, Squash, and Cilantro, wrapped in flour tortillas) from the Thai menu and the Onion Kulcha from the Indian menu.
I am a big fan of duck, so anytime I see it on a menu you can bet I will be ordering it. I just love the strong and rich flavor of the duck. This is why I was highly anticipating the Duck Roll appetizer. The rolls were good, but nothing mind-blowing. Mainly, due to the fact that the duck was dry and lacked flavor.
Next up was the Onion Kulcha. For those of you not familiar with the dish, it is a type of leavened Indian bread made from wheat flour. It is very similar in look and taste to Naan bread. The bread was mouthwatering! It was served with a side of delicious creamy curry sauce (YUM!). It was just the perfect pre dinner nibble.
Fernando ordered the classic Indian dish Lamb Vindaloo (cubes of lamb simmered in spicy curry). He requested that the curry be as spicy as possible. Sadly, the lamb was tough and the sauce was all spice and no flavor. The best thing about this dish was the jasmine rice.
I decided to go with the Shrimp Green Curry from the Thai Menu. I also requested that my dish be made as spicy as possible. It was sublimely divine. The curry was creamy, yet light. The vegetables still had their crunch and the shrimp was perfectly cooked. Plus, it had just the right kick of spice. Its one of the best green curries I have tasted here in Puerto Rico.
Overall, we were a bit disappointed with our dining experience. In the past, we have always had great meals at Bangkok & Bombay, but it seems the quality of the food has dwindled a bit. Fernando and I are still debating if we will give it another shot after our experience. However, we encourage you to visit and check it out for yourself.
